It’s that time of year again when school is soon to be out, and we are looking forward to our summer vacations. Whether you are road tripping, camping, hiking, or flying, eating healthy can be a challenge, but with a little planning and preparation it is totally doable! Here are some suggestions for healthy options to pack for your trip. Most of these can be pre-made and stored in a bag or cooler. They are versatile and can be used for either meals or snacks. Also, part of the fun of summer vacation is going out to eat so I have included tips for choosing healthier options from a restaurant menu.
Healthy foods to pack:
Pancakes and sausage (we’ve even taken leftovers hiking)
Egg cups
Hard boiled eggs
Instant oatmeal packs
Breakfast burritos
Egg sandwich on whole wheat English muffin
PBJ on whole wheat bread or tortilla
Meat and cheese tortilla roll-ups
String cheese
Fresh fruit
Yogurt
Trail mix
Nuts
Dried fruit
Granola
Whole grain muffins
Hummus and veggies or healthy crackers
Pre-popped popcorn stored in a zip top bag
Granola bars (low sugar)
Pasta salad
Quinoa salad
Tuna salad
Making healthy choices while eating out:
Choose grilled over fried
Whole grain over white bread, pasta, and rice if possible
Oil and vinegar dressing on the side instead of creamy dressing for salads
Fruit and veggies instead of fries
We can and should choose to eat healthy while on vacation, but it’s all about balance! What is summer without the occasional ice cream cone, cheeseburger or hotdog? Enjoy your summer with healthy choices, occasional special treats, and safe travels!!
